Duramax sheds are said to be one of the best brands in the storage shed business, are they actually overrated? The answer is a no, they deserve the reputation thanks to their large product line of strong and exceptional sheds that meet varying needs of the public.

Attributes of Duramax sheds

A distinction between this brand of shed and the others in the market is that Duramax sheds require so little maintenance attention. These sheds are made of heavy-duty vinyl reinforced by impressive steel framing.

The strength of Duramax sheds become clear after years of having one. Snow, fire, strong winds — all these are easy challenges to the integrity of the shed’s condition. A common praise given by buyers to the Duramax sheds is that there is no need to repaint these sheds every few years. Not just that, but the family would not have to constantly think of mildew or dents or rotting when they decide to get Duramax sheds.

There is a variety of Duramax sheds when it comes to size. While they offer the standard-sized units, they also sell sheds big enough to become garages, boathouse, just to name a few. If small Duramax sheds are what you are after, then check out their sheds (3′ by 5′) called Yardmate line. Another is their Sidemate line that measures 4′ by 8′.

The Duramax shed kits are so easy to build, assembly-wise. The simple Duramax sheds could be put up in just a few hours. Duramax not only makes and sells metal and vinyl sheds, they also have greenhouses and insulated buildings.

Policies of the company

After the products has been shipped, can one cancel the order? Of course it is possible, but the buyer would be under a 25 percent restocking fee. A returned shed must be unopened in the initial packaging, which includes all the manuals and extensions (if there are any).

The company would not be responsible for the shipping expenses. Any and all shipping costs would be shouldered by the customer. Also, charges from the original shipment would be non-refundable. To avoid all of these hassles, it would be best to be sure when finalizing a choice.

If you are having a difficult time in choosing, but you are intent on a Duramax shed, then here is a solid tip: get help from the experts. That is, an expert on sheds not connected to the Duramax entity. This way, you could be assured of an objective take on things.

Assuming you need more space for the storage of your stuff and all the carpentry tools, keeping them in an Arrow shed is a good choice. Chances are, you would have no regrets later on.

Building an outdoor kind of shed is a good course of action, it would give you that much-needed space without too much expenses. Renting another place just for storage purposes would be more costly, not to mention that if that place is far from the house, you would be spending gas money every time you need to get something. Besides, Arrow sheds, if properly constructed, are meant to last for a long time.

Usually, Arrow sheds are metallic, and they could be bought in kits of varying styles to coincide with the style of your garden or house. A person could choose from many kinds of colors and metal kinds. There are vinyl, galvanized steel, and even wood with the baked-on enamel parts. If you want a shed that does not look like it’s obviously metal, then pick on a unique kind of color.

Roof types come in gabled, sloped, or gambrel. Choose one that would complement the style of your main house, this would even add to the real estate worth later on. That is, if ever you decide to sell off the house and move to another place.

The kits for the Arrow sheds

This kit is so easy to put up, and there is no need to hire a carpenter, or get a carpenter’s license. With majority of these kits, all you need would be the following: stepladder, screwdriver and pliers. There are still a few others, but those things would start you rolling. Be sure to have a companion, there might be heavy lifting to be done. To avoid cutting yourself, always wear gloves. If you can have extra finances, then save yourself all the labor and hire a team of specialists to do the job for you. You could just relax while the Arrow sheds are being built.

A specific kind of Arrow sheds

This is the kind with horizontal siding that has a vinyl layer to give a pleasing look. Here are the particulars:

five times thicker than other kinds

more than 7 feet tall

wall color

almond colored roof

storage space (in square feet): 115′ x 734′

wall height: 71 and 1/4 inches

door opening: around 70 inches in height, 55.5 inches in width

The Suncast sheds, which are usually used for storage, give a useful durable answer to one’s needs. They are made of high-quality polyethylene materials, and this brand is touted as being very easy to assemble. (As opposed to others makers of sheds and shed kits that are quite difficult to assemble.) The Suncast sheds have the stay-dry design, which is a resin component that could meet high temperatures without the risks of melting. Suncast sheds, because of this design, retain their strength and durability even in very cold conditions.

In the main, Suncast sheds are resistant to fading. Majority of the mid to big-sized sheds are accompanied by a built-in support for shelves. The company also offers pad-lockable doors in the package. There are different forms of Suncast sheds to choose from. These sheds arrive in many styles and sizes. There are even deck boxes for the family’s balcony or deck.

The principal reason for getting Suncast sheds

Over the years, we would find our belongings multiply faster than we could find a space for it. Here are the particulars of a typical shed from this company: external dimensions of 83″ x 66″ by 65″, and internal dimensions of 69″ x 66″ x 65″. This particular shed is of molded resin, and it is rust-proof. This feature is a boon to a very busy homeowner, as giving a shed a makeover every six months would prove to be both tiring and time-consuming. A reasonable amount for one is $400, but of course, you could try looking for a unit that is cheaper. It allows for shelving, if one is so inclined.

Various materials of Suncast sheds

The metal Suncast sheds are also sought-after because they offer strong security, and do not need the kind of maintenance needed by wooden units. Speaking of security, our equipments could be very expensive- and they need to be secured so that thieves would not consider you as a candidate for their ingenious trade. Not just that, but pointed knives, rakes, or whatnot might pose danger to the toddlers or young kids. A Suncast shed would solve all of those risks.

Many suppliers guarantee that their metal units would fight off rust from three to 12 years.

What about plastic sheds? The material assures against rust or rotting, but they are not perfect. Plastic means there could be condensation that would form in the underside of the roof, but with proper maintenance, this should just be a minornuisance and not a big problem.

Tuff Shed Inc is one of the biggest manufacturers/installers of garages and storage buildings in the US. Its history could be brought back to 1981, the time when it was put up by Tom Saurey. You may not believe it, but the entity was formed with one single pick-up truck. In 2002, a collaboration with Home Depot resulted in an exclusive line, called the Sundance series and Keystone. It was the start of a magnificent boom for this firm.

How were the Tuff Sheds advertised?

Among the other products, the company has been noted for its novel and funny adverts on TV. Its adverts show some kind of vehicle doing a hazardous stunt on a building, but causing no dent on the building, proving the strength of the structure. Exaggerated it may be, but it raked in significant revenues for the company.

Different factors to consider before buying Tuff Sheds

The function is the primary factor when buying a Tuff Shed. What exactly is the purpose in buying a Tuff shed? It could be for storage, as a stable for the horses, or any other aim. If you correctly determine the main function, you would be able to get rid of some styles not suited to the function. Like, if it is for the storage of your mowers, then think of Tuff sheds that have double doors and not stairs. Consider also a ventilated one if you would be storing some gasoline in there.

The building materials of Tuff Sheds

Tuff Sheds may be pre-fabricated, but if you opt for a kit, then you might want to buy other materials so that you could customize them. Take note though, the customization would only go up to a point, as opposed to a totally DIY project. (If it is the latter, that means you have your own plan, you buy all your materials, and you would let all your creativity be used.) Ordinary siding materials include rocks, vinyl or wood. Cedar is a good wood for a storage shed since it is durable and generally rot-resistant.

If your experience with carpentry work is virtually none, then you may not consider building a shed from scratch. Building a shed from scratch requires much time and money, which are important in today’s financially difficult times. There is no sin in being talentless in building sheds, that is why entities like Tuff exist. They have the kits that include prepared pieces. Just like the toy model helicopter you used to assemble when you were a kid, these articles would simply be assembled.

Tuff Sheds are among the most popular in the market, and you would be saving yourself a lot of work when you join the multitudes who have bought one of their units.

The Rubbermaid sheds have turned into a very famous choice for a lot of families as far as storage structures are concerned. No wonder, for these sheds come in different sizes, they are weather-resistant, long-lasting, and require so little maintenance.

Sizes of Rubbermaid sheds

There are small units, about 4 1/2 feet wide by 2 feet deep and around 3 feet in height. These small sheds serve a lot of good to the owner, for they could house many garden tools or whatnot, especially if the yard is quite small.

The bigger sheds are offered too. Some of them are about 6 feet in height, 6 feet deep, and about 5 feet in width. Such Rubbermaid sheds are best for those with spacious yards. These sheds could be used to house many kinds of articles such as a bike, a lawnmower, just to name a few.

A special breed of Rubbermaid sheds

The company has come up with an unusual kind, for it seems to have been invented with bikes or lawn tools in mind. This particular shed is like a tall box: it is 5 feet wide, about 7 feet deep, and around 4 1/2 feet in height.

Many Rubbermaid products have interlocking pieces that allow for easy assembly. They also hold molded grooves, and they are for shelves if the owner wants them to be included. Take note that shelves themselves do not come with the whole package, but this is not a problem. One could just buy some pieces of wood, and insert them in.

Among the smaller Rubbermaid sheds have been constructed so that the top could be moved like a lid. Most of them have a hasp so that a lock could be attached to it. Remember, in these times, professional thieves are targetting every place — the house, the car, the garage, and, yes, your shed.

Floors of Rubbermaid sheds hold good features, among them is a ramp lip. This makes it easy for the user to move a lawn mower into and out of the structure.

Rubbemaid also produces a box-kind shed. This kind of shed has molded anchor grooves permitting the person to link the shed to another part of the house, that or to secure it onto the ground- this translates to a great deal of flexibility.

Rubbermaid sheds do not get dented easily, and you do not need to repaint them so many times in a year’s time. That being said, I would have to say that there is an area they could improve on. They all come in basically just one color, and this is a tan hue they label as “taupe.” It could be boring if you are the kind of chooser who wants a grand variety of colors ranging from neutral colors to outlandish pink.

Let me make this very clear, this is not a form of advert for the following companies, and neither is this a form of endorsement. This is simply a reiteration on why many reviewers consider them as among the best in the shed-storage business. Read on and I will let you be the judge when the time comes for you to review their products on your own.

The top three shed brands

They are Duramax, Arrow and Rubbermaid, all of them with excellent offerings as far as sheds are concerned. These mentioned brands have made lives of hundreds of families more simple, more convenient, and they offer a set of different price tags as well. Take note, a very expensive shed or a dirt-cheap one does not promise high quality. Online, when you are searching for sheds, check who has what, and which firm has the best feedbacks from the experts. All these three shed brands qualify.

From Rubbermaid

The Modular vertical outdoor storage shed: the wall panels lock together without any difficulty. A structural foam floor has a slanted entry ramp, the hasp is lockable, the floor capable of holding up to 1,300 lbs (which means a lot of tools). These sheds could hold big items such as a lawn mower or other heavy tools.

From Duramax

The vinyl storage shed measuring 4 by 8. From their Sidemate line, the shed is so easy to assemble, it has been designed to be erected at the house’s side. Made from vinyl, this shed is maintenance-free, which is a big advantage especially if you don’t have much time to do cleaning. In realistic terms, these sheds would not rot, dent, or rust for a very long time. They are also fire-resistant, and you would not have any worries if you plan to put gasoline in it. Other specifications of this product include installation in just four hours, presence of door handles, and a storage space which is about 154 cubic feet.

From Arrow

The Woodview has a wood-looking grain, with a tall roof. Patio chairs and grills could fit in into the spacious interior. The interior dimensions are: (w) 118, d: 90 inches, and Height is 87″- take note, all figures have been rounded off. Wall height is 62″, and the recommended foundation size would be: Width:121″ Depth:92 3/4″. (This last one is important, because the foundation would dictate whether that shed would last for years or if it would crumble down even before the first year is over.) If you are in doubt, it is not a sin to consult the experts (of course, prepare for more money, some of these experts charge very high fees).

A lot of folks keep on wondering how to erect a shed, and these are people who are not aware that there are so many kinds of designs and instructions out in the market. There are those families or indviduals who go to the local home improvement or hardware store, get some tools, then go on to put up their own sheds. The end result is a shed that might look good at first, but will only crumble during the first typhoon or snowstorm. The worse kind is that it would not even look good when it is finished. By following the guidebooks available, there is really no cause to have a ramshackle structure.

The crucial steps of a shed design procedure

The number one step is to determine where exactly the shed should be placed. Take note that if you belong to a village where you and the neighbors are quite close to each other, make sure you are not overstepping the demarcation line. Make sure that when you proceed to constructing your shed, the shed design should incorporate factors such as the free space available in your lot.

The second step in coming up with your own shed design is to determine what kind of foundation to use. Wood is fine, concrete is good. However, you should keep in mind that if you would be moving the shed later on, a concrete slab is required.

The third step, after determining the location and the kind of foundation that you will use for your shed, is to choose the particular design. A lot of makes are suggested by online experts, from the simplest kind to the design that would make your eyes pop wide open in disbelief. (A little hint: if you do not really want to stand out in the neighborhood, avoid the latter. Having a novel kind of shed may be good because the snobbish neighbors might start talking to you about it, but just as probable, they might be laughing behind your back.) A very conservative shed is safest.

The size is important in shed design

Yes, it may be the most conservative looking shed, but if the only thing it could hold is the family’s bike and dog combined and nothing else, then the space consumed by the shed has been wasted. It is a good assumption that you have tools and a lawnmower, consider all these in the construction phase of the shed. Do not overdo it, a shed that is as quite big may be a useless effort if you don’t have anything to use it for; it may end just being a place where you store all the things that you really don’t need.

One last word: a shed is a good thing. It increases the price tag of your property if ever your family decides to move away and sell the house. A new owner would appreciate the fact that they no longer have to erect a shed.

When building a shed (or getting a prebuilt one), make sure that its doors are big enough for the things meant to be stored. Standard sizes for the shed door is 2 feet and 7 inches wide and 6 feet in height. A height of 6′6″ is better in most instances.

Why pay attention to the shed door? It would be the source of both hilarity and frustration if after finishing the most expensive and beautiful shed in the block, you suddenly find out that you could not even fit in the lawnmower that needs to be secured in the shed.

The design of the shed door

The Design of the door would be influenced by the general motif of the shed. One kind is the sliding door. Are there advantages for this kind of shed door? They are economical when it comes to space, and big openings could be secured without the necessity of “swinging space.” One common way of erecting a shed door is the use of the battened door, and there are three kinds of them: ledged, ledged and braced, framed and ledged.

The ledged kind of shed door

The ledged is the simplest kind with vertical boards and three to four horizontal ledges. According to some experts, this kind of door is best only for internal use. If it is used outside, there is a tendency to move at the edge away from hinges. This is due to the timber swelling and shrinkage too.

The ledged and braced kind of shed door

Braces would prevent the sagging of the door, and this kind of door relies on nails for bracing. This is an improvement over the ledged kind, but it is not to be considered as the best.

The framed/ledged shed doors

This kind has a better look than the first two kind of shed doors, and it is stronger. It is more resistant to changes of the timber vis-a-vis weather conditions.

One special kind of shed door

The recycled doors may be the source of derision from some quarters, but they sure has their merits. The money that could be saved is not to be scoffed at. If this is what you want, consider the local establishments that offer remodelling projects and tools. You may just find a perfectly good door that is about to be thrown away.

The security factor of the shed door

Here is the crucial thing to realize as far as shed locks are concerned, nothing is one hundred percent safe. Here are tips to minimize the chances of undesirables targetting your shed:

Cover the windows of your shed.

Use a heavy-duty lock to keep your shed door secure.

The most important things must not be kept in the shed. For example, a family heirloom that has been passed through many generations must be kept in the house’s secure location or the bank vault.

Even if your shed has cost your family quite a hefty sum, if the roof is so out of place and aesthetically unpleasing, all your troubles would go for naught. Here are five principal styles that are used by so many shed-builders:

Shed roof type #1: The simple shed roof

The pent roof or mono pitch has a gentle slope to allow rainwater to be let out. Such roofs are useful if the height of the shed is mandated by local councils. The thing to watch out for in this kind of shed roof is that the covering should be water-resistant for the low-roof incline.

Shed roof type #2: The gable

This is one of the most popular types of shed roof. It has a middle ridge and equal slopes downwards. Always remember that the clay tiles need a roof pitch at the minimum of 35 degrees, while tiles made of asphalt should be about 18 degrees (with underlayment).

Shed roof type #3: The saltbox

In this kind of style, the ridge line is displaced to around 1/3 from front wall. The shed roof would usually have equal slopes of 12 in 12 (every side), and in premade kinds, a formula is tinkered with, turning the shed look it would fall to one side. Thus, if it’s a kit (the pre-built) you really want, check out the pictures well from all angles. (Better if you could check it out in person.)

Shed roof type #4: The gambrel or barn roof

This is also known as the colonial dutch barn. It has a middle ridge, every side sloping off, and at midway of the roof, the slopes move in a steep manner. A benefit of this roof is that there is extra head room in the eaves department. This extra space could be utilized in two ways: (1) low wall sheds: giving the entire place an airy ambience; and (2) higher sidewalls: a loft could be made for whatever use

Shed roof type #5: The hipped style

It is arguably the most beautiful kind of shed roof, if you aim to make your shed one of the centerpieces of your abode. This roof is the same as the gable with one difference: the ends of the roof go up to the ridge instead of a vertical facade. Hipped ends cut the visual bulk. This kind of shed roof is often seen in summer houses where the roof storage is not a priority. Remember that if you are building this on your own, appearances are not everything. You may have the most elegant shed in the state, but if it falls down in a matter of weeks, a lot of efforts would be nullified.

In today’s tough times, we need to save as much as we could. Consider this: carpenters would charge approximately from $25 per hour, and this could mean that you may have to shell our more than $100 for the entire work. In today’s tough economic times, there has to be a more financially sound option if you want to construct a shed on your own. By using the kits or the shed blueprints, you would be able to save some useful dollars. These blueprints must give directives on a step-by-step basis. It should take you from the creation of the foundation up to the installation of the roof.

Advantages of having DIY sheds

While undergoing a DIY project is more challenging that simply buying the project completely, there are quite a few advantages to undertaking the project itself. Here are just a few:

Enhancing the market value of one’s house

Creating a more beautiful look to the property

Giving more storage spaces

Involving the whole family in the DIY shed project

The wooden kind of DIY sheds

If you would care to surf the Net, you would find that the average price of a pre-built shed is around $700, but if you make it yourself, the costs could be trimmed to just two hundred. Besides the costs, there is another upside. I have heard of so many people complain (after getting a prebuilt), that they do not like the roof or the door, or the fact that it is not pink. They would rather live with the “defect” rather than pay the hefty surcharges for returning it. A do-it-yourself shed means you could customize it to your heart’s desire.

A wooden shed could be painted with so many kinds, you have full liberty in the choice of color. If it’s a combination of pink and black, weird as it is, who has the right to prevent you? It is your shed, and you should dictate the appearance of your shed based on your personal preferences.

In putting up do-it-yourself sheds, make a very particular plan, which should have details and diagrams. (Take note that if you hire an architec to come up with diagrams, you might be defeating the purpose of saving money, because these professionals do not make drawings just for the fun of it.) The next step is to determine where to put the shed, particularly if you have a large unoccupied ground. Avoid putting the shed on top of pipes, unless the shed you plan to build could be moved easily from one place to another.
